Bathroom Reno – Concrete Countertops

Horrible pink tile on tubs & floors. So much grout.

I had heard of using concrete to refinish counter-tops, For $36, a 10-lb bag went a long way (one bag was enough for both the counter-top and tub tile).

used: Ardex Feather Finish Gray Self-Drying Cement.  On top, I used 3 coats of a standard concrete sealer (check the instructions on the back and get one that cleans up with water and soap).

  • Use a mask while mixing,
  • Mix up a small amount at a time.  It’ll dry out as you’re working, and it’s better to make multiple small batches per layer then try to add water to a dry batch and remix.
  • You’ll end up applying in multiple layers. Get a trowel, it’s worthwhile.
    • First layer works as scaffolding, giving the next layer something to hold onto.  Get as much as you can on there, but don’t worry about full coverage.
    • After it drys, sand down any rough/bumpy parts.
    • Second layer gets you fuller coverage.  Once it’s dry, give it another sanding.  Repeat Repeat until it looks nice. I found that a final coat w/ a paintbrush left a nice finish.
